GOSHEN WATER UTILITY REMINDS RESIDENTS TO GUARD AGAINST FROZEN WATER LINES.

In past years the Water Utility issued a Freeze Warning asking for people to take the precaution of running a single faucet.  During a posted Freeze Warning, utility accounts were adjusted if the customer contacted the Utility Business Office.  Because current conditions do not warrant a Freeze Warning, utility billing account adjustments are not being offered.  To prevent disruption to service, the Utility will continue to monitor the depth of the local frost line and keep customers informed if further actions become necessary via local newspapers, Goshen’s web page, goshenindiana.org, and Facebook.

The Goshen Water Utility has determined that a Freeze Warning is currently unnecessary.  However, due to the predicted cold weather, the Utility suggests that residential and commercial Water Utility customers with water services and plumbing prone to freezing leave their water run in a small stream the size of a pencil lead.  Running water from within a home or business is less likely to freeze.

 Residents are encouraged to take further precautions against frozen or busted water lines by ensuring that exposed pipes are insulted and by eliminating sources of cold air near water lines.  Areas most vulnerable to freezing are basements, crawl spaces, unheated rooms, and water lines located in or along outside walls.  To lessen the risk for water lines along outside walls within cabinets, consider leaving the cabinet doors open.

To guard against frozen pipes, especially during cold weather, you can take several preventive measures:

  • Insulate Pipes: Insulate exposed pipes with pipe insulation sleeves or wrapping. Focus on pipes in attics, basements, crawl spaces, and exterior walls.
  • Seal Leaks: Seal any gaps or cracks in your home’s walls, windows, and foundation to prevent cold air from entering and reaching the pipes.
  • Keep a Constant Temperature: Maintain a consistent temperature in your home, especially during cold nights. Set your thermostat to a level that keeps the interior warm enough to prevent freezing.
  • Open Cabinet Doors: Allow warm air to circulate around pipes under sinks and vanities by keeping cabinet doors open during extremely cold weather.
  • Let Faucets Drip: When temperatures drop significantly, allow faucets to drip slightly. This helps relieve pressure in the pipes, reducing the risk of freezing.
  • Disconnect Outdoor Hoses: Disconnect and drain outdoor hoses, and shut off the outdoor water supply. This prevents water from freezing in the hose and extending into the pipes.
  • Add Heat Tape: Consider using electrical heat tape or cables on pipes that are prone to freezing. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for installation.
  • Keep Doors and Windows Closed: Ensure that doors and windows are closed tightly to minimize the entry of cold air into your home.
  • Inspect Insulation: Regularly check the insulation in your home, especially in attics and basements. Ensure that it is in good condition and replace any damaged insulation.

If you suspect that your pipes are already frozen, it’s crucial to act quickly to thaw them and prevent bursting. You can use a hairdryer, heat lamp, or hot towels to thaw the affected pipes. Avoid using open flames or any methods that could cause damage.

Public Notice: Jefferson Street reconstruction from Main Street to Third Street – Notice of Intent

The City of Goshen (204 E. Jefferson Street, Suite #1, Goshen, Indiana 46528) will be submitting a Notice of Intent (NOI) letter to notify the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) of their intent to comply with the requirements of the Indiana Construction Stormwater General Permit (CSGP) to discharge stormwater from construction and land disturbing activities associated with the Jefferson Street Reconstruction from Main Street to Third Street project. The project is located along Jefferson Street from just east of the intersection with Main Street to the intersection with Third Street on the west.

The project is located in the SE 1/4 of Section 9, Township 36 N, Range 6 East, in Elkhart Township, Elkhart County, Indiana.

Runoff from the project will soak into the underlying soil through the proposed pervious concrete block roadway with an eventual release to the Elkhart River and through the public storm sewer with a direct discharge to the Elkhart River.

Wilden Avenue closed for paving tomorrow

Crews are moving quickly to finish construction along Wilden Avenue. In order to complete the final surface paving, Rieth-Riley will need to close Wilden Avenue between Rock Run Creek and Michigan Avenue for part of the day tomorrow, Friday, November 3rd. Vehicles will not be able to drive between Indiana Avenue and Michigan Avenue during that time.

BOIL WATER ORDER- 100, 200, & 300 BLOCKS OF WEST WILDEN AVENUE

On the morning of Friday, July 21st, a water main valve was inadvertently shut off during construction work on W Wilden Avenue. The water was immediately turned back on but until all necessary testing is completed and the water is deemed safe to drink a boil water order is in effect for the area of the 100, 200, & 300 Block of W Wilden Avenue between N 1st Street and N Main Street.SR 15 (see the MAP for more details) until further notice.

City water within the affected area should not be consumed by humans or pets without first following these boiling procedures:

  • Bring the water (even if it is filtered) to a full boil for at least five (5) minutes.
  • Cool and aerate the boiled water by pouring it through the air from one clean container to another or mixing rapidly with a clean utensil.
  • Aeration helps to reduce the flat taste caused by boiling.
  • Store cooled boiled water in clean and airtight containers.           

Please discard all ice from ice-making machines that use city water and turn them off until the boil water order is lifted.

The water remains safe for bathing, laundry, and restroom facilities. Cleaning dishes with a dishwasher is acceptable if it has a sanitizing cycle (180 degrees F minimum final rinse temperature). Hand-washed dishes should be rinsed with boiled or bottled water.

Be careful to not swallow any water during bathing or showering and use bottled or boiled water for brushing your teeth.

CANCELED BOIL WATER ADVISORY- S 10TH STREET & 617 E JEFFERSON STREET

The Water Boil Advisory issued on Wednesday, June 21, 2023, for the homes located within the 200 Block of S 10th Street and 617 E Jefferson Street has been CANCELED. Water samples have been taken, test results are satisfactory, and it is no longer necessary to boil your water.

BOIL WATER ADVISORY- S 10TH STREET & 617 E JEFFERSON STREET

Starting at 9:00 am on Wednesday, June 21st, a boil water advisory is in effect for the area of the 200 Block of S 10th Street and 617 E Jefferson Street (see the MAP for more details) due to the water main being shut off to allow for new valves to be installed.

The affected area is between E Jefferson and the US 33/Lincolnway E Overpass. Until the routine maintenance of the public water main is completed, we are also asking that you conserve water and only use what is necessary for household and personal needs.

Once the water comes back on water customers should boil their drinking water until notified that the water is safe to drink once again. Water samples will be taken and analyzed for the presence of bacteria. If two consecutive tests pass, the boil water order will be lifted. Notice of the boil water order cancellation will be posted to the City’s Facebook and Website.

City water within the affected area should not be consumed by humans or pets without first following these boiling procedures:

NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING for the College Avenue (County Road 36) Annexation into the City of Goshen

A Petition for Annexation into the City of Goshen has been filed requesting the annexation of certain real estate located outside, but contiguous to the corporate limits of the City of Goshen.  This area is identified as the “College Avenue (County Road 36) Annexation Area” and consists of approximately 34.2 acres of real estate generally located along both the north and south sides of College Avenue (County Road 36), west of County Road 31 and east of the railroad.  The Goshen Common Council will conduct a public hearing on the College Avenue (County Road 36) Annexation at its regular meeting on June 5, 2023, at 6 p.m.  The hearing will be held in the City Court Room/Council Chambers at the Goshen Police & Court Building, 111 East Jefferson Street, Goshen.  All interested members of the public are invited to attend and will be given the opportunity to testify on the proposed annexation at the public hearing.
