2024 Spring brush pick-up begins April 22

The City of Goshen Street Department will begin the Spring brush pick-up on Monday, April 22, and will run until Friday, May 3, 2024. Please have any yard brush and leaves out before the start date to ensure pick-up. Leaf and brush piles placed in alleyways will not be picked up.

Because of the large amount of brush and leaves usually placed out for this first pick-up, crews can take longer to make it through the City. During the Spring pick-up, the street department will make two passes through the City. Residents should have leaves and brush placed at the curb, but not in the street, so as not to cause a road hazard or hinder water drainage. Piles should not be placed around fire hydrants, mailboxes, or telephone poles. Do not place brush or trash on or in leaf piles.

When placing brush, please keep the following in mind:

  • Brush and leaves may not be mixed, and must be free of obstacles.
  • Brush pile size can be no more than 5’ high, 5’ deep, and 10’ long. Branches must be 6” diameter or less.
  • Brush shall not be placed out for pickup during the months of October – March.
  • The city does not pickup brush generated by landscaping and tree tree trimming contractors.  Contractors will be required to remove all brush generated by their work.
  • The city has extended the brush trailer program to year-round (weather permitting) for residents without the ability to comply with the new ordinance.
  • Residents/property owners may be cited and fined for non-compliance of this ordinance.

The street department conducts “brush only” collection on the last Monday of the months of May through September. The dates summer brush pick-up begins are below:

  • May 28, 2024
  • June 24, 2024
  • July 29, 2024
  • August 26, 2024
  • September 30, 2024

Final brush collection of 2023

The final brush pickup of the year will begin the week of September 25, 2023.

During scheduled brush collections, the Street Department will make only one pass through the city to pick up brush. Please have your brush by the front curb, but not in the street, by 7:00 a.m. in the morning on the first day. Brush will not be picked up in alleys. The piles of brush should be trash-free. Crews cannot access the piles if blocked by vehicles.

The brush trailer program now runs throughout the year, weather permitting. The trailer can be reserved for the removal of large amounts of brush.  If a homeowner is trimming their own bushes or trees, they can schedule a trailer to be dropped off to put their brush in.  This program is for the homeowner only and is not to be used by private landscaping or tree-trimming professionals. This program is free of charge as long as only brush is placed in the trailer.

2016 BRUSH COLLECTION

092916_brushcollection5

The Street Department ended the final round of the Brush Collection program for 2016 last week. Thanks to all who moved their brush out for removal promptly.

For those who missed the scheduled collection last week, or those who have brush accumulations through Friday, Oct. 28, the Street Department will have Dial-a-Trailers available for overnight use to dispose of brush. The trailers may be pre-arranged by calling 574.534.9711. There is no charge for the service.

Brush piles not disposed of by Oct. 28 become the responsibility of the property owner for disposal.

Now that the street department crews have completed this final brush collection, their priority moves to the collection of leaves. Leaf collection details will be announced as the season progresses.

Please do not place leaves on top of the brush for pickup, because the street department uses vacuums to collect leaves — a different method from collecting brush. Also, please do not mix leaves with garbage, for they will not be collected by Republic Services.

For those who find themselves with yard waste beyond collection weeks, the Environmental Center, located near the intersection of Indiana Avenue and County Road 19, is free to Goshen residents and is open 52 weeks a year. From April through November, their hours are Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-6 p.m. and Saturday, 8 a.m.-noon; and from December through March their hours are Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. The Environmental Center is closed on Sunday and holidays. The Center accepts brush, leaves (loose or in a bag), at no charge for Goshen residents. If the leaves are bagged, the bags must be emptied.
