All City of Goshen offices will be closed Monday, September 6, in observance of Labor Day. Borden Waste Away will not collect trash on Monday that week. Trash collection services will be delayed by one day after the holiday. The Board of Works meeting has been postponed to Tuesday, September 7, at 2 p.m.

Mayor Jeremy Stutsman will be working with other US mayors and community leaders to provide advice and perspective on environmental issues in local communities to the Environmental Protection Agency.

Mayor Stutsman was one of 11 new members appointed this week to the Small Communities Advisory Subcommittee (SCAS). The Small Community Advisory Subcommittee was established by EPA in 1996 to advise the Administrator on environmental issues of concern to the residents of smaller communities.

“I’m honored to welcome this diverse, highly qualified group of local leaders who will bring valuable insight and experience to the Agency,” said EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan in a statement. “EPA is counting on their input and collaboration to help achieve our mission to protect public health and the environment in every zip code. From tackling climate change to advancing environmental justice, we need local partners at the table to address our most pressing environmental challenges.”

Mayor Stutsman was nominated in April. His was one of 150 nominations the EPA received following a solicitation in March. His nomination included support letters from Accelerate Indiana Municipalities, Earth Charter Indiana, Michiana Area Council of Governments and the Indiana University Environmental Resilience Institute.

“I am honored to be given the opportunity to work alongside other community leaders in identifying and addressing environmental issues that may be of concern to our constituents and communities,” Mayor Stutsman said. “I look forward to not only sharing but also listening to other communities’ experience in advancing environmental solutions in a thoughtful and budget conscious way to ensure a clean, safe planet to our future generations.”

The SCAS and the Local Government Advisory Committee, which provides independent policy advice to the EPA Administrator on a broad range of issues affecting local governments, plan to hold their first meeting this fall.

The monthly brush pickup will begin on the week of August 30, 2021.

During scheduled brush collections, the Street Department will make only one pass through the city to pick up brush. Please have your brush by the front curb, but not in the street, by that first day in the morning at 7 a.m. Brush will not be picked up in alleys. The piles of brush should be trash-free. Crews cannot access the piles if blocked by vehicles.

The next summer brush pick up week (and the last one for the year) will begin on September 27, 2021.

The Goshen Street Department will start the North Goshen paving project beginning today Wednesday, Aug. 18. There will be lane restrictions for the duration of the project and Garden Street will have a full road closure between 5th and 6th streets beginning Wednesday.

On Monday, August 16, a water pressure drop was registered in the area of East Goshen. A boil order has been issued now that the water is back.

In Consultation with the Indiana Department of Environmental Management, it has been determined that the water customers should boil their drinking water. This precautionary measure is recommended because a water pressure drop occurred in your service area.

It is recommended that all cooking and drinking water be brought to a complete boil for five minutes before using. Please continue to boil all cooking and drinking water until we notify you that it is no longer necessary.

Goshen Community Development Director Mark Brinson has been appointed the City’s first Deputy Mayor, and will serve in his new role to provide support in managing mayoral duties.

The Goshen City Council unanimously passed an ordinance establishing the position during their regular meeting Tuesday, August 3. Brinson was formally appointed Monday, August 16.

“Mark Brinson has just been a phenomenal asset to the City of Goshen,” Mayor Jeremy Stutsman told Council members. “Mark has been very involved in the development end of things, and over the last couple of years he’s been actually working on pieces that aren’t necessarily part of his job, so this title better suits for what he has been doing.”

Mayor Stutsman added that the new role would not take him away from his duties as Mayor of Goshen.

“I want to be very clear to the public and our community and council members; this isn’t pulling me out of those scenarios. I respond to phone calls and emails and letters every single day; I’m still going to be doing that,” Mayor Stutsman said, adding he also will continue to engage with neighborhood associations, business owners and developers.

Along with the new position, the mayor will be restructuring the Department of Community Development. Prior to the creation of the Director of Community Development position in 2008, the City had a Building Commissioner and a Redevelopment Director.

When the positions became vacant, the City did not fill them due to economic concerns as a result of the Great Recession. The new changes will move the Assistant Building Commissioner and Redevelopment Project Manager to fill the Building Commissioner and Redevelopment Director positions.

Myron Grise will be promoted to the position of Building Commissioner, and Becky Hutsell will be promoted to the position of Redevelopment Director. Their current roles will not be filled.

The Community Development Director position will not be filled, as Brinson will continue to take on Community Development duties along with projects helping the mayor.

“It’s an honor to be asked to serve as Goshen’s first Deputy Mayor,” Brinson said. “Working for the city has always been a privilege and I am excited about the opportunity to work alongside Mayor Stutsman and the entire Goshen team in my expanded role.”

Brinson has been a champion for the community of Goshen, developing areas of the city into quality of life projects for all residents to enjoy since his hiring in 2008. 

“I’m proud of the fact that Goshen has become a model community for social equity, environmental sustainability and economic growth. As Deputy Mayor, I look forward to building on our strong reputation as a great place to live, work and visit.”

College Avenue, between Lincolnway East/US 33 and Oak Lane will be closed this Saturday, August 14, 2021, for the installation of deep stormwater pipe crossings. This is part of the US33/College Avenue intersection widening project.

The road will be re-opened at the end of the day, and access will be maintained to residential properties and businesses within the closure.

The detour will be US 33, to Eisenhower Drive North, to Century Drive.

Goshen Health, in partnership with the Center for Healing and Hope, will hold a vaccine clinic at the Goshen Theater during First Fridays August 6, 2021, from 5 to 9 p.m.

The vaccines administered will be those created by Johnson & Johnson—which do not require a second shot. The vaccines are free and walk ins are welcome. No insurance needed and no prior registration required.

You must be age 18 or older to receive this vaccine. You will be asked to remain onsite for 15 minutes after receiving the shot for observation.
