‘BEAUTIFY GOSHEN’ WEEK: MAY 7-14, 2016

(Translated to Spanish below.)

In conjunction with the Goshen Chamber of Commerce’s “Beautify Goshen” Week, the Goshen Street Department will be making additional disposal services available to assist city residents in their “Beautify Goshen” tasks.

This is a free service May 7–14 only (an eight-day week with two Saturdays), and there is no limit to the quantity of items that may be disposed of. Residents must make arrangements to transport the items; there will not be curbside pickup.

The collection site will be the Goshen Street Department, 475 Steury Ave. Hours that items will be accepted are:

  • Saturday, May 7 from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Sunday, May 8: CLOSED
  • Monday––Friday, May 9–13 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Saturday, May 14 from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

In order to keep disallowed items from entering the waste stream, the Street Department will have a crew member on hand at all times monitoring the items being accepted. Items that can be disposed of are:

  • Non-hazardous refuse, such as furniture, carpeting, lumber, dry wall, metal and vinyl siding, windows, fiberglass insulation, mattresses, stoves, landscape timbers, bricks, etc.
  • White goods, such as refrigerators, air conditioners, freezers, dehumidifiers, etc.; the Freon does not have to be removed.
  • Electronic waste, such as computers, home phones, televisions, etc.
  • Tires up to 16½”, either on or off their rims

The following items will not be accepted during this large-item disposal:

  • Pesticides or herbicides (insect or weed killers)
  • Unlabeled drums containing any substance
  • Sealed pressurized containers (propane tanks, etc.)
  • Paint thinners, oil base or water base paint
  • Brush and yard waste
  • Asbestos insulation
  • Contaminated soil

During the other 51 weeks of the year, Goshen residents may place one or two large items per month with their regular weekly trash for removal. (This does not include electronics, old tube-type televisions or any cooling appliances containing Freon or any of the items not accepted in the Beautify Goshen disposal.) For details of the year-long, large-item disposal, contact Republic Services at 522.1331.

Because this program is paid for by Goshen residents’ tax dollars, items cannot be accepted from individuals who live outside the Goshen city limits.

We are grateful to two area organizations for providing free or reduced fees for their services during Beautify Goshen Week. OmniSource Goshen disposes of the white goods at no charge, and Lewis Salvage, Warsaw, disposes of computers and certain electronics at a reduced rate.

Identical program information is posted on the City of Goshen’s web site and Facebook: www.goshenindiana.org; www.goshenindiana.org/street-department and www.facebook.com/CityOfGoshen/. Residents may also contact the Street Department at 534.9711 or streets@goshencity.com.

UPDATING THE COUNTY-WIDE MULTI-HAZARD MITIGATION PLAN – PUBLIC MEETING MAY 12

Elkhart County, in cooperation with the towns of Bristol, Middlebury, Nappanee and Wakarusa, and the cities of Elkhart and Goshen, have prepared an update to the 2007 Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plan to address the risk and vulnerability of communities in the county which may be affected by known natural, technological and political hazards.

The Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 requires communities to update their MHMP every five years in order to be eligible for any future mitigation funding through the State Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The intent of the MHMP is to plan for a disaster before it occurs in order to reduce the physical, social and economical impact of that disaster.

The draft Elkhart County MHMP Update will be presented at a public meeting Thursday May 12. It will be presented at 6:30 p.m. in the Correctional Facility Campus, Jail Training Room, 26861 CR 26, Elkhart. Topics covered during this public presentation will include: an overview of the planning requirements; a summary of the risk assessment and vulnerability analysis; and proposed mitigation projects for prevention, property protection, natural resource protection, emergency services, structural control projects and public information.

Following the public meeting, a hard copy document will be available at the Elkhart County EMA Office, 26861 CR 26, Elkhar and comments will be accepted through Friday, May 20. Submit comments to Jennifer Tobey at the Elkhart County Emergency Management Agency, (574) 891-2238 or jtobey@elkhartcounty.com

Everyone is encouraged to attend and participate in this informational session.

MAY STORMWATER TOOLBOX NEWSLETTER

May 2016 Toolbox PhotoTrash in our oceans is a big issue. Trash in the Great Lakes is a big issue. Trash in our local waterways is a big issue. Check out this month’s Stormwater Toolbox Newsletter to find out what the Stormwater Department discovered over the last few months as they conducted an inventory of all the pipes discharging into our local waterways.

Additionally, with warm weather comes the cutting of grass, which is a stormwater pollutant of concern. Make sure to sweep up or blow those pesky grass clippings off of the street before they go down the storm drain.
