BRUSH PICK-UP NEXT WEEK

The Goshen Street Department will begin their monthly brush pick-up program beginning Tuesday, May 31. Residents must take care that piles are placed in the proper location prior to the first day of the pick up at 7:00 in the morning; it is impossible to know which neighborhoods will be picked up on which day of the week. The Department will proceed as quickly as possible and will make a single trip down each street.

Remember, the City of Goshen is not responsible for disposal of large tree limbs and debris from a home owner or contractor taking down a tree on their property. This is beyond the scope of normal yard waste.

Brush piles should be placed at the curb, not in the street. No brush will be picked up in city alleys, and piles are to be trash-free and placed away from utility poles, fire hydrants or trees. If vehicles are parked in front of brush piles the street crew cannot pick up the pile.

Brush should not be put out for collection until the weekend just prior to start of the scheduled collection week. Example: place brush no earlier than May 29 or 30 for collection beginning the 31st of May.

For those with a large amount of brush or yard waste between the scheduled collection dates, residents have two options. A Dial-A-Truck is available to use at no cost to residents; contact the Street Department for details. Or, residents can take yard waste to the Environmental Center located at County Road 19 just west of Indiana Ave.

The June brush collection will be conducted the week of the 27th. Brush collections for the remainder of this summer begin the last Monday of each month, through September.

Any resident with questions may contact the Goshen Street Department at 534-9711 or streets@goshencity.com, Monday–Friday between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m.

The Parks & Recreation maintenance staff will be lowering the Mill Race 1–2’ this afternoon. There is a large tree limb lodged in the tailgate mechanism that can’t be pushed through, nor can it be pulled back without relieving the downstream pressure on the limb.

The water level should be lowered enough to remove the limb by early Friday morning. Once removed the gates will be returned to the position to put the water back to where it is now. The water level may be back to its current level by Friday afternoon.

MAPLE CITY BICYCLE ADVISORY COMMITTEE ANNOUNCES MAYORS’ RIDE

Ride with Mayor Jeremy Stutsman and two former mayors, Allan Kauffman and Mike Puro, on Monday, May 23, to kick off Bicycle-to-Work Week. Goshen’s Bicycle-to-Work Week is May 23–27, and the Maple City Bicycle Advisory Committee (MCBAC) is encouraging people in Goshen to consider the possibility of biking to work that week.

As a way to kick off the week, the MCBAC has asked the Mayor Stutsman lead an after-work “Mayors’ Ride” on Monday, May 23. Stutsman has expanded the ride so it is hosted by he and former mayors Puro and Kauffman. Any interested cyclist is welcome to join the 4.5 mile ride. The most recent Mayor’s Ride attracted about 30 riders.

The Mayor’s Ride will start at 5:15 p.m. from the parking lot east of City Hall, 202 South Fifth Street, proceed south to the Goshen dam pond, return north on the Mill Race Trail and end at The Chief. The Ride is free, and no advanced registration is necessary. If there is a threat of rain, a cancellation will be posted on the City’s Facebook page by 4:30 p.m.

“To celebrate the Bike-to-Work Week kick-off ride, I have invited Kauffman and Puro to join me as co-leaders. This is to acknowledge their work as pioneers of Goshen’s extensive, award-winning Maple City Bike and Pedestrian Trails. Their vision and commitment to providing the social and physical benefits of the trail system has made today’s 30 miles of trails a reality. Their forethought has brought together men, women and children of diverse generations, backgrounds and cultures as they enjoy the trails. All are invited to ride along on this Bike-to-Work Week ride.” said Mayor Jeremy Stutsman.

The purpose of Bicycle-to-Work week is to encourage people to leave their cars at home for a week and try cycling instead. “For trips of less than two miles, it’s often faster to go by bicycle than by car in the city,” said Stutsman. “We hope people will ‘test the water’ of bicycle commuting next week and enjoy the exercise and not having to pay the high price of gas.”
The MCBAC is a partnership between dedicated residents and City employees to address bicycle-related issues covering recreation, commerce, transportation, parking, and safety.

The League of American Bicyclists is the national sponsor of Bike Month, Bike-to-Work Week, Bike-to-Work Day.

THE MAPLE CITY BIKE TO WORK WEEK

Mayor Jeremy Stutsman announces that May 23–27, is Bike to Work Week in the Maple City.

In conjunction with the League of American Bicyclists, the week is observed as a way to ask all citizens to consider bicycling to work, on a regular basis and especially during this week.

Bike to Work Week is also a reminder to motor vehicle drivers to be on the lookout for bicyclists. And to note that there will more people riding on our streets and the Maple City Greenway Bike and Pedestrian Path with the end of the school year and the beginning of summer and that everyone should use extra caution when encountering cyclists on our roadways.

Mayor Stutsman stated, “Bicycling is an environmentally sound form of transportation, excellent form of fitness, and a great family activity.”
