Created in 2004 with the passage of Ordinance 4201, and amended in 2006 by Ordinance 4339 and again in 2009 by Ordinance 4526, the Goshen Community Relations Commission (CRC) is a group of 9 volunteer residents appointed by City Council and the Mayor to focus on the “people issues” of our town and to guide the work of a staff director. We are mothers, fathers, business people, educators, immigrants and native born Americans who share the vision of a unified, thriving Goshen.

In 2004, then Mayor Alan Kauffman and the City Council had the foresight to establish the CRC for the purpose of fostering a climate of positive community relations, non-discrimination and equal opportunity within and throughout all of Goshen. This purpose and mission has, is and will always guide the work of the CRC. With this in mind, during 2014 and 2015, ,the CRC engaged the community to identify the following vision which the CRC is pursuing and will continue to passionately pursue:
Goshen is a vibrant, dynamic community. Together we strive to:
- Strengthen our social and economic resources
- Promote vitality, safety, and wholeness
- Engage, embrace, and celebrate our cultural commonalities and differences
- Address challenges to our common good
During 2017, the CRC is considering the best approaches to pursuing this vision, and developing a plan to pursue this vision. We will provide regular updates on this work on the CRC Facebook page.
As a reminder to ourselves and the entire community, we have also named and claimed some basic mission principles which will allow us to move towards positive community relations. In the true spirit of being a community-focused organization, the CRC has embarked on a long-term process of inviting others to interact with, endorse and adopt these principles as their own. The mechanism for accomplishing this goal is a Community Engagement Pledge which individuals, groups, and organizations will be, over time, invited to become signatories. The CRC is pleased to announce that Concilio Hispano was the first group to take up this challenge and engaged in conversation around these principles with the CRC in February. On May 7, 2011, Concilio Hispano signed on to this pledge in front of hundreds of people at the annual Diversity Day event. Whether or not you become a signatory to this pledge, the CRC encourages you to embrace these principles and the aspiration of becoming a community of positive community relations.
