GOSHEN, Ind. — The City of Goshen will close a section of the millrace canal path starting the week of April 7.
Crews will perform maintenance along Wellington Ditch using the path to access logjams and move equipment safely. The closure, approved by the Goshen Board of Works on Thursday, April 3, 2025, will stretch from the Murray Street crossing to the Waverly Avenue crossing.
The City expects the closure to last no more than 45 days and aims to reopen the path before Memorial Day.
Stormwater Coordinator Jason Kauffman said crews may reopen the path on weekends or evenings when conditions allow and it is safe. Davey Resource Group will repair any damage to the path before it fully reopens for public use.
Clearing 13 Logjams to Protect Canal Banks
The Wellington Ditch project includes the removal of 13 logjams between Murray and Waverly to reduce the risk of bank destabilization and protect infrastructure along the canal. The ditch routes stormwater runoff into the Elkhart River. Removing these blockages will help restore flow, reduce erosion, and support long-term environmental health.
Millrace Canal Path Detour Route Posted
During the closure, pedestrians can follow a signed detour: From the Murray Street crossing, head east to Wilson Avenue, then south to West Lafayette Avenue. Continue east to South Main Street, then south to Waverly Avenue and back west to the canal path. Detour signs and pedestrian notices will be placed at appropriate locations.
The City of Goshen regrets any inconvenience the temporary closure or detour may cause for residents and users of the Millrace path. The path is a vital part of Goshen’s quality of place and a cherished resource for the community. While closures like this are never ideal, routine maintenance is necessary to preserve the long-term health of our waterways and trails. Projects like the Wellington Ditch logjam removal help ensure Goshen remains environmentally resilient for generations to come.
