Goshen reopens Millrace Canal path early after completing Wellington Ditch Project, enhancing drainage, safety, and public trail access.

Millrace Trail Reopens Weeks Early After Major Ditch Project

GOSHEN, Ind. – Goshen reopened the Millrace trail last week after crews completed major work on the Wellington Ditch project.

Crews began the project in early April. The work was expected to last through late May but wrapped up several weeks early.

The closure affected the stretch between Westwood Road and the bridge just south of Douglas Street.

City staff joined Davey Resource Group (DRG) for a final walkthrough of the site late last week.

DRG agreed to clear wood debris and remove all “Path Closed” and detour signs. Later that day, City staff confirmed the cleanup was complete. The path officially reopened. DRG will return soon to complete final stabilization work.

Crews have removed all heavy equipment from the Millrace trail. Trail users will notice open views, lower water levels, and faster flow in the ditch.

Vegetation will take time to regrow. Some areas will look partially restored until plants take root.

Goshen encourages residents to report fallen trees or debris along the path to the Stormwater Department.

The Wellington Ditch project improves stormwater flow, protects water quality, and helps keep the Millrace path safe and accessible.

To report issues, call the Goshen Stormwater Department at 574-537-3832.
