GOSHEN, Ind. — The Goshen Fire Department welcomed four new firefighters Wednesday, April 2, during a ceremony in the main auditorium of the Goshen Theater downtown. The event marked the graduation of the latest class from the department’s 20-week Recruit Academy.
The graduates—Charles Holderbaum, Brian Guerra, Jeffery Gill, and Ryan Rentfrow—completed intensive training in firefighting, hazmat response, EMS, water rescue, and rope rescue.
“These recruits chose a path that requires courage, clarity, and care,” Mayor Gina Leichty said during her welcome address. “They join a team that serves Goshen with dedication and heart.”
Who are the new firefighters?
- Charles Holderbaum: Holderbaum is a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who brings military discipline, leadership, and a strong sense of service to the department.

- Brian Guerra: Guerra comes from FDNY EMS, offering valuable urban emergency experience and a commitment to public health and safety.

- Jeffery Gill: Gill served in the U.S. Navy and brings a team-focused mindset, discipline, and proven leadership skills to his new role.

- Ryan Rentfrow: Rentfrow has a background in the private sector and prior fire service, combining business experience with emergency response knowledge.

“We are excited to welcome these talented and driven individuals to our department,” said Anthony Powell, Fire Chief of Goshen Fire Department. “Their commitment to public service and the skills they bring with them will be instrumental as we continue to protect and serve our community.”

In 2024, Goshen Fire and EMS crews responded to more than 5,500 emergency calls—nearly 80% of which were medical. Average response time was just over five minutes.
The department also leads prevention and education efforts, including fire safety programs in schools, smoke alarm installations, vehicle rescue tool upgrades, and mobile health outreach for mental wellness.
Mayor Leichty thanked the families of the graduates, recognizing the sacrifices the new firefighters make in support of public safety.
Each graduate enters a probationary period to continue training through real-world experience and mentorship.
The Goshen Fire Department provides emergency response and prevention services to more than 34,000 residents.
