Cold Weather Water Safety Tips to Protect Your Home

GOSHEN, Ind. — With overnight lows expected to hover around zero through the rest of the month, the City of Goshen is reminding residents to follow cold weather water safety practices to prevent frozen or broken pipes.

The Goshen Water Utility urges residents to take precautions now, as prolonged cold increases the risk of pipe damage, service disruptions, and costly repairs.

Cold Weather Water Safety

Recent inspections show frost depth continuing to increase as sub-zero temperatures persist. The Goshen Water Utility has already received reports of damage caused by frozen exterior spigots.

Residents should take the following steps to protect their homes and businesses:

  • Remove hoses from outdoor spigots
  • Shut off interior valves serving exterior faucets
  • Open exterior spigots to drain trapped water
  • Keep indoor heat at a consistent temperature
  • Insulate exposed pipes
  • Open cabinet doors near exterior plumbing
  • Seal cracks or gaps that allow cold air inside
  • Allow a slow drip from faucets prone to freezing
  • Keep garage doors closed to retain heat

Taking these precautions can reduce the risk of frozen pipes, water loss, and property damage during extreme cold.
