UPDATE FROM MAYOR JEREMY STUTSMAN: TRAVEL WARNING LOWERED TO ADVISORY

Dear residents,

Over the past two days, Goshen has experienced historic flooding along the Elkhart River. A rapid snow melt combined with heavy rain caused the Elkhart River to crest at 12.49 feet. This is higher than any level previously recorded. A number of streets have been closed to traffic making travel difficult; due to receding water levels we have been able to reopen several of the roads.

As a result of the flooding, we are estimating approximately 150 homes and businesses have experienced some type of flooding. Many residents have been forced to seek emergency shelter and a number of businesses have temporarily closed. Although there appears to be significant property damage, we are extremely fortunate that no injuries have been reported. However, there are still dangerous conditions that should not be underestimated. If you have evacuated, please use extreme caution when returning to your property and only return when water levels have safely receded.

The City of Goshen has been in contact with State and Federal agencies to make sure we do everything possible to access funding for repairs and cleanup of impacted properties. The first step in this process is making sure a damage assessment is completed for every property impacted by the flood. We will be distributing flyers today to all those properties located in flood areas with a phone number to call for more information. If you have already started cleaning up please do all you can to document in both writing and pictures; this will help your ability to access state and federal funds.

The weather forecast shows more rain this weekend. For this reason I am leaving the declaration of emergency in place for the City of Goshen. I am moving our designation from warning to advisory. This means we are saying drive with caution and be vigilant in watching for updates from the city. Please continue watching our Facebook page, website and your local media for these updates.

I am incredibly proud of our city staff; they have gone above and beyond to help others. I have received offers of additional staff, materials and equipment from several other communities in our region. It is very humbling to know of all the groups and individuals who are out there just waiting to help. To all of you I would like to say thank you. We are managing the emergency tasks and will need your help to complete the biggest task associated with this flood: the cleanup.

I know this is a difficult time for Goshen residents and business owners, but also know that we are a resilient community that can come back for a challenge. We always do.

Sincerely,

Jeremy P. Stutsman
Mayor of Goshen
