Bashor Children’s Home announced Tuesday, Jan. 30, that the Goshen Fire Department, along with the Elkhart Fire Department and Martin’s Super Markets, have signed up to become Safe Places in Elkhart County.
This means the GFD, EFD and Martin’s Super Market locations in Elkhart County will be a safe haven for children and teenagers in need of shelter. Children and teens in need of a safe place are encouraged to walk into any of these designated Safe Places and ask for help. A trained staff member will connect the child to Bashor Children’s Home.
“Our County and our Communities thrive on great partnerships,” said Mayor Jeremy Stutsman, who attended the press conference where the announcement was made Tuesday. “This is just one more example of finding ways to work together.”
Fire Chief Dan Sink, who also attended the news conference, said he was pleased to work in conjunction with the other entities in Elkhart.
“We are happy to open our doors as safe spaces for kids,” he said. “Bashor will soon be providing shift training for us as we move forward serving our community in this unique partnership.”
The National Safe Place Agency, a program that designates schools, fire stations, libraries, and other youth-friendly organizations as Safe Place locations, designated Bashor Children’s Home as the official Safe Station of Elkhart County’s Safe Place Network in fall 2017.
