Legacy of service: Former fire chief leaves mark on community

GOSHEN, Ind. — Whether leading a team of firefighters into an emergency, standing at attention with the Goshen Veterans Honor Guard, or planning his next cross-country trip, John Alheim lived a life defined by service and dedication.

Alheim, who served as Fire Chief from 1990 to 2006, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 26, 2025, at Goshen Hospital. He was 78.

During his 35-year career, he modernized department operations, improved training programs, and strengthened firefighter safety. His leadership left a lasting impact on Goshen.

“John Alheim’s leadership shaped the Goshen Fire Department into the exemplary organization it is today,” said Mayor Gina Leichty. “He was not just a skilled fire chief but a compassionate leader who cared deeply for our community.”

Born on Oct. 12, 1946, in Goshen, Alheim graduated from Goshen High School in 1964. He served in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1969, completing a tour in Vietnam.

A Legacy of Leadership in the Goshen Fire Department

After his military service, Alheim joined the Goshen Fire Department. He worked his way through the ranks with dedication and skill. In 1990, he became fire chief and led the department until retirement in 2005.

Recently retired Fire Chief Dan Sink remembers Alheim as his training officer in 1981. He later served as Alheim’s Assistant Chief.

“John taught me how to be a good firefighter and a better person,” Sink said. “He had an unforgettable laugh, brought energy to every room, and remained dedicated to Goshen long after retirement. He exemplified what it means to serve a community.”

Alheim also supported fellow veterans. He served as commander of VFW Post 985 in Goshen and participated in the Goshen Veterans Honor Guard.

After retirement, he traveled and spent more time with family. Friends recall his adventurous spirit and dedication to loved ones.

Survivors include his wife, Kathy Alheim; daughters, Kim (Dan) Berkey, Angie Alheim, and Michelle (Ben) Eldridge, all of Goshen; and six grandchildren, Samantha (Mark) Jenney, Allyson (Caleb Denney) Sorg, Haleigh Cleveland, Cade Alheim, Zackary Eldridge, and Abbigail (Daniel) Morillo. Three great-grandchildren, Khalil, Sol, and Molly, also survive him. His parents and brother, Robert Alheim, preceded him in death.

Visitation will be Friday, Jan. 31, 2025 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home and Saturday, Feb. 1 from 12 until the 1 p.m. followed by a funeral service officiated by Dr. Greggory E. Lanzen.

John Alheim’s remarkable life of service, leadership, and dedication to Goshen’s safety and well-being will not be forgotten. His contributions have left an indelible mark on the community he loved and served.
