GOSHEN, Ind. — Before the sun dipped behind downtown buildings, the steady rhythm of pow wow drums carried through Washington Street. Goshen gathered in a circle of song and remembrance for Indigenous People’s Day.
The celebration, hosted by the City’s Community Relations Commission with First Fridays, took place Oct. 3 at Ignition Garage. Residents came together to honor the Potawatomi and Miami peoples through music, dance, and storytelling.
Presenter Madalene BigBear of the Pokagon Band of the Potawatomi Indians shared cultural traditions rooted in connection and community. The Iron Bear Singers performed pow wow songs that link generations and preserve the living strength of Indigenous culture.
Mayor Gina Leichty said, “As we honor the contributions of the Potawatomi and Miami peoples, we are reminded of the promise and potential of this land and our community. Together, we will continue to build a Goshen that is welcoming and prosperous, a community that creates abundance for all who call this home.”
